Apple raised its purchase commitments by $33 billion, Supply Chain Dive reported on November 6. The move comes as a shortage of DRAM and NAND memory changes what electronics buyers can secure and what they pay1. Tom's Hardware described a $33 billion climb in Apple's manufacturing bill2.
Apple also said memory costs will rise again. "What we're seeing with memory pricing right now is unprecedented," chief executive John Ternus said on the November 2 earnings call. "Now for the December quarter, we expect even higher memory costs"3. SupplyChainBrain reported the same guidance6. Apple posted revenue of $114.5 billion for the quarter ended September 26, up 12 percent7. It said price increases and inventory carried in from the previous quarter softened some of the higher memory costs1.
What is scarce, and what is not
The crunch is specific to memory. High bandwidth memory (HBM), the stacked memory used in AI accelerators, uses far more wafer capacity per bit than standard DRAM4. As Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron shifted wafers to HBM, supply of conventional DDR4 and DDR5 for PCs, phones and servers tightened4. NAND went the same way, with makers prioritising enterprise solid-state drives and retiring older nodes. NAND wafer contract prices rose more than 60% month on month for some categories in November 20254.
The squeeze is clearest in older parts. TrendForce's spot table on November 6 showed the older DDR4 16Gb chip at a session average of 80.815, above the newer DDR5 16Gb part at 60.1678. In TrendForce's October 26 NAND update, MLC 64Gb spot chips were at 43.413, up 1.61%9.
Apple said its main supply constraint last quarter was advanced-node availability for its SoCs, according to chief operating officer Sabih Khan3. He said those constraints are easing as more of the lineup moves to 2-nanometer technology3.
How far costs have already moved
DRAM prices rose 172% through 20254. Indian electronics executives put memory prices up two to three times in the past 10 months5. Finished goods reflect it: smartphone prices in India are up 35-40% and television prices 20-25% on average5. Haier India chief executive Satish NS said printed circuit boards carrying memory for 32 to 43 inch televisions doubled to $80 this year, and vendors expect $110 by January or February5.
Buyers are engineering around the cost. TrendForce expects reballed memory, a lower-cost component type, to reach 7-9% of smartphone use in 2027 from about 3-4% in 202610. HP said memory reached 35% of PC build materials, from 15 to 18%4. Gartner has said entry laptops under $500 may not be viable within two years4.
Demand is taking the rest of the adjustment. India's smartphone shipments fell 20-26% to 35.8 million units in the September quarter11. Phone and television production is likely to be up to 20% below planned levels for two to three months5.
How long the shortage lasts
Forecasts diverge. Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said in June 2026 that the shortage would last through 2027, with gradual improvement in 20284. Samsung's Jason Kong expects it to run through 2028 and SK Hynix's Kwak Noh-Jung until 2030; Kearney PERLab expects at least until 20304. Acer chief executive Jason Chen offered a different view in September 2026, saying prices would start falling in late 2027 as Chinese supply grows4.
New capacity is slow. Micron broke ground on a $9.3 billion fab in July 2026 that is not expected to start production until the third quarter of 20284. Demand keeps scaling: TrendForce projects combined capital spending by the nine largest cloud providers above $1.5 trillion in 2027, up 60%12.
What to do now
Move earlier than usual. Apple's $33 billion commitment shows the price of certainty at the top of the market1. Qualify alternates within the part, not just a second supplier. Legacy DDR4 is trading above DDR58 and older nodes are being retired4, so approved density and speed substitutions can keep a build on schedule.
Put a mechanism in the contract rather than a single number. Reference a published DRAM or NAND benchmark, set a review date, and agree caps and floors, so a doubling in the benchmark does not land entirely on one side.
Expect cash demands. Suppliers are requiring prepayment or shorter payment terms, which is hardest on smaller buyers4. Tie any prepayment to delivery milestones and remedies for non-delivery.
Watch list
Memory makers' December quarter results from Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung, and the contract settlements for the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, are the next hard numbers. Cloud capex guidance matters too, with TrendForce projecting above $1.5 trillion for 202712. On the demand side, Gartner and IDC expect PC shipments down 10-11% and smartphones down 8-9% in 2026, while TrendForce sees the PC market down 2.6%4. Faster demand destruction would ease allocation sooner.
