Three September-quarter results this week point the same way. Indian suppliers are lifting prices to cover inputs, and buyers are still paying. Hindustan Unilever raised prices by about 7.5% and still grew volumes 7%6. Hyundai Motor India's profit fell about 24% to ₹1,196 crore even as revenue hit a record ₹20,696 crore2. Dodla Dairy paid 15.7% more for milk at ₹43.2 a litre but raised its selling price only 8% to ₹61.93.

India's consumer price inflation rose to a 23-month high of 5.5% in September 2026 from 4.8% in August, the RBI said in its October bulletin7. Brent crude was $123.10 a barrel on 27 October, up 87.9% from a year earlier8. The rupee was 95.22 to the dollar on 28 October, 7.8% weaker than a year earlier9.

What is actually inflating

The report on HUL's results flags crude-linked derivatives, packaging and edible oil prices as the pressure building across India's consumer goods sector1. HUL said commodity inflation should continue in the short term1. Its Home Care business, which makes detergents, was squeezed by petrochemical-linked inputs even after a price rise6.

Price covers the cost, not the margin

Price did not fully rebuild HUL's margin. EBITDA margin was 22.6%, down 140 basis points from a year earlier, even after the 7.5% rise1. Chief executive Priya Nair said HUL had taken pricing to cover all the input costs it had seen, and that those costs were still high12.

Chief financial officer Niranjan Gupta said HUL first recovers the absolute increase in costs, and that recovery in percentage terms depends on where input prices go next12. Nair said HUL will keep balancing price with "savings, procurement, supply chain efficiencies"12. If a supplier is already funding part of the inflation internally, part of the ask is negotiable.

Volume growth is not protection. Maruti Suzuki sold 26.5% more vehicles, yet material costs rose to nearly 80% of net sales from about 76%, and operating EBITDA margin fell to 9.4% from 12.7%13. Hyundai's expenses rose 24% to ₹19,302 crore, led by materials consumed2.

Nestle India shows the other side. Revenue rose 20.45% to ₹6,782.17 crore and profit rose 35.81%, led by double-digit volume growth14. Globally, Nestle SA grew 4% organically, made up of 2.8% real internal growth and 1.1% pricing14. Where volume does most of the work, a supplier's case for price is weaker.

The rupee, and the baskets that are easing

The rupee lost about 6% of its value in 2026, making it Asia's second-worst performer, and hit a record low of 96.96 in May15. Deutsche Bank expects the rupee to weaken past ₹97 in 2027 if the global macroeconomic environment does not improve meaningfully16.

Iron ore is the clearest easing basket. It averaged $100.44 a dry tonne in September, down 5.6% from a year earlier4. On 28 October the Dalian contract closed at 672 yuan a tonne, up 1.20%, and the seaborne 61% index was $89.65 a dry tonne, though the report said a range-bound view remained appropriate17.

Steel is not following. US producer prices for iron and steel were up 20.7% year on year in September5. Vedanta reported record September-quarter revenue of ₹25,812 crore and a 60% EBITDA margin on higher base metal prices, while its own zinc cost of production fell 29% to $703 a tonne18. A supplier with falling unit costs and a 60% margin has room to argue.

Global peers say they will keep pricing. Procter & Gamble raised its expected profit hit from raw material, energy and freight costs to $1.4 billion from $1 billion19. Its finance chief Andre Schulten said "the industry generally is pricing up because there is no way to recover this level of commodity pressure without pricing"19. These are forecasts, not results.

What to do before 2027 contracts

  • Ask for the increase in rupees per unit, not just a percentage. HUL recovers the absolute cost increase first12.
  • Ask for a basket-by-basket breakdown. Dodla's milk cost rose 15.7% while its packing material cost rose 41.6%3.
  • Cap escalation to a named index. Deutsche Bank expects CPI to average 6% in October-December 2026 and 5% in FY27, and says wholesale price inflation above 11% could push more input costs to consumers16.
  • Write a currency clause into dollar-linked contracts. Deutsche Bank expects the rupee past ₹97 in 2027 if the global macro environment does not improve meaningfully16.
  • Ask what the supplier is already saving. HUL funds part of the inflation from procurement and supply-chain savings12, and Hyundai said cost cuts improved its EBITDA margin from the June quarter2.
  • Ask when a price rise takes effect. Dodla's ₹2.5 a litre increase came in the second half of the quarter, so only part of it showed3.
